John and Shiney BIG UPHILL Bike Trip

3 days- 250 miles. NO sweat. But the entire time going uphill, over the Andes Mountains, and a headwind, it was a bit tougher. A lot of sweat. Shiney flew in to Santa Cruz, the low part of Bolivia and biked solo to COchabamba in 4 days. He is the man. SO we biked from Cochabamba to La Paz, medium to very high.

DAY ONE- 85 miles- Stared at 8:00 AM. Finn and Jenny gave up pats on the back and prayers as we headed out. It was about 20 miles of flat but 65 then straight over the Andes Mountains. It was rediculous. We are both carrying our gear on heavy mountain bikes. We stopped for 30 minutes for oatmeal on the side of the road. Arrival time- 8:30 PM, in the dark. Time in the saddle- 12 hours. I have never been on a bike for 12 hours n one day. It hurt.
The town (kind of) we stayed in had no food or water. We thankfully had beds, but had to have a dinner of poached eggs. We ate out of a cut up soda bottle. It was very interesting.

Jenny seeing us off day one.......

DAY 2- 100 miles- 11 hours. We climbed for the first hour, were in the clouds the whole time, which was cool, but then it was just a slight incline with the wind in our face for 10 hours. Wonderful. My bike kept breaking too, spokes, chain, but it is a good thing Shiner can fix bikes. It was hard, 100 miles on a downhill bike loaded with gear, BUT WE DID IT!!!!

DAY 3- 65 miles- 8 hours- Same slight uphill with wind in our face, but we were so excited for the last 5 mile descent into La Paz. It was the part of the truip we had been so excited for....a downhill!!!!!! And of course, Shiney got a flat about halfway down, was forced to walk the last 3 or 4 miles. BUT WE DID IT!!!! It was fun!!!!

Great December...

December was fun.
A short school month, got off early or the holidays FINNEY AND SHINEY came down to Cochabamba to visit us!!! SO COOL!!! We got to go to Chrsto with them (the largest statue of Christ in the WORLD!!!!) and this time we got to climb up inside him. It was dang cool. A lot of small windy steps. It was a great time.

And we even got to let the kids have a flour bomb fight. Thanks again Young Life.
