Carnival
RANDOM!! Photo of our bathroom while traveling. This small of a bathroom is typical in Bolivia. This way you can-- to goto the bathroom, take a shower, and brush your teeth all at the same time.
Carnival is a huge celebration here, water balloons flying everywhere. We took a trip to two cool cities, Potosi and Sucre. We actually boarded a bus not knowing where we'd end up. It was fun. We really enjoyed Potosi because we got to visit mines. Potosi used to be the richest city in the world because of it's extensive silver mining.
We had to bring gifts into the miners. We brought coca leaves and a bottle of alcohol....like the kind that use to clean wounds. They use it to make Bolivian Whiskey. Yum!
Here is us down deep in the mind, chill'n with the Tio, or the uncle, the protector or god of the mine. Basically we were in the devils territory. Crazy?
Here we are squeezed into a shaft with some of the workers enjoying some Bolivian Whiskey. It was so interesting hearing their stories. They work for 10-12 hours a day, they don't eat anything the whole time, they only chew coca leaves. The coca gives them the energy they need. They only live to be about 40. It is hard work.
Sucre is a BEAUTIFUL city, Bolivia's 1st capital (it has 2?), but we didn't like it!!! Becuase we couldn't escape the water balloons and super soakers. We couldn't walk down the beautiful balcony-lined streets without getting pelted. It was hard. We were even sitting on a balcony eating lunch, letting our clothes dry out....and guys started throwing balloons at us. It was rediculous. They got us and our food wet. My temper was about to kick in. Geez oh man. We finally made it well above the water balloons and enjoyed a great meal with a great view.
Tough part- we'll never go back and experience the great city. Why? A 10-hour bus ride home, about 8 of those hours was on dirt and cobblestone roads!!! Nedless to say, we didn't sleep much, and 10 hours on a bumpy bus waren't too cool.
The other tradition, besides water balloons, is dancing. Dancers parade down the streets doing a varitly of different dances. Here is us getting ready for our dances at school. Every class picks a dance and gets all decked out in the different outfits. It is beautiful. Even the teachers did a dance.
